The mountainous part of the city (so called Antananambony or Ville Haute) is a colourful and popular district of the city. When being here, you have the impression you’re in a betsileo village with its central square, a little market (Antsenakely) and its public washing-tub. You also find here a baker, a butcher, small groceries, a shoemaker, and the office of the Fokontany (like Chief of District).
But the most impressive here is the density of churches within a small area (less than 2 squared km): beside the catholic cathedral and the bishop’s buildings, you’ll find 4 evangelical churches (1 lutheran et 3 reformed). The oldest church of the town (Antranobiriky,which means The House Made Of Bricks) has been elevated 1885 on the top of the hill, and is still used today by the reformed church of Madagascar (FJKM).
